Those who travel frequently can rest easy with Code42 knowing their data is being backed up even on the road, and that if their computer is lost or stolen on a trip, all their data is accessible from the web or the mobile app. Often times we rely on external hard drives in our offices or homes to keep us backed up, but these drives have very high failure rates and do not protect us against floods, fires, or theft. View the Code42 requirement webpage here: System Requirements DocumentĬode42 is a fantastic way to make sure your data remains safe, versioned, and geographically redundant. What are the minimum system requirements for Code42? On the vast majority of these test computers we saw no performance reduction, even on units we purposely stress tested while running Code42. We performed an evaluation on over eighty computers of varying ages including Windows PC’s, Mac’s, Linux workstations, file servers, and even virtual computers. Will the Code42 application slow down my computer? You will be able to securely access and restore your data from any computer using our Code42 website or you can restore data from the iOS and Android apps. Your data will back up securely whenever you are connected to the internet, regardless of whether you have VPN connection. You do not need to be on campus to backup or restore data with Code42. In the event that the Code42 cloud was breached, your data would still not be visible.ĭo I have to be on campus to backup or restore? The private keys to this encryption are never shared with Code42 so the vendor has no access to your data. Your data is protected with 256-bit AES encryption before it leaves your computer, it is securely transmitted to the Code42 cloud, and remains encrypted at rest. Since this is a business application used daily the required state does not often occur. This file can only back up when Outlook is closed and the computer is not sleeping. An example of this is a Microsoft Outlook PST (email archive) file. Some files, such as databases or email archives, are not often closed. As soon as the file has closed, it will transfer it to the cloud. Once a file has created or updated on your computer, your operating system will notify Code42 that it has changed. Deleted files are not removed from the backup, so those can be retrieved as well.Īre there any file types that Code42 can not back up? The default settings retain a version of your data every fifteen minutes for the last week, every four hours for the last ninety days, and once a day beyond that. Once the first backup is complete, your computer reports any changed data. But, the data will ultimately out grow the sparse bundle, and I’ll have to mirror it to a new one.Code42 (Formerly CrashPlan) Workstation BackupĬode42 is a software solution for Windows, Mac, and Linux that automatically and securely backs up computer data to the cloud.Ĭode42 is installed on your computer, scans your drive(s) for files, and backs up the all data, other than your program files and the operating system, to the cloud. A downside to Chronosync and the NAS, is that it’s best to put the data in a sparse bundle, as that keeps all of ownership settings and allows the data to be encrypted. And since it’s only syncing the data, I don’t necessarily need a tool/app to restore the data, if/when I need it. It creates archived versions of files, bases on the criteria that I’ve set, just like CrashPlan. I’m also thinking of ditching the CrashPlan local backup, and using Chronosync to backup to my NAS.Ĭhronosync has much less overhead it just syncs the data to the drive without de-duplicating, compressing or encrypting. So to that end, I’ve started using Chronosync to make a bootable, daily backup of my internal hard drive. It’s working great, but because of the way that they maintain the backups, it appears that more maintenance is happening than backing up. Using CrashPlan (for Small Businesses) I’m backing up to their cloud (CrashPlan Central), as well as my Synology NAS.
